lime stabilization of waste activated sludge
Authors
abstract
background sewage sludge (biosolids) is a byproduct of wastewater treatment that accumulates in large quantities. effective stabilization and disinfection of sewage sludge prior to land application are necessary to not only protect human health, but also to induce the public its benefits and safety. currently, many wastewater treatment plants in iran dispose great amounts of untreated sewage sludge to the environment. objectives the purpose of this work was to upgrade wastewater treatment plants by lime stabilization of waste sludge. materials and methods lime stabilization of waste sludge from shoosh wastewater treatment plant was performed in a 10-l reactor. microbial quality of lime-stabilized sludge was checked for 6 weeks in the reactor. during this stage, ph, fc (fecal coliforms) and viable helminthes ova density were determined and compared with sludge stabilized criteria suggested by usepa. results average number of fecal coliforms and viable helminthes ova in waste sludge were 1.65 × 1012 mpn/g of dry solids (ds) and 353 ova/4 g of dry solids, respectively. 1.8. conclusions the results of this study showed that sewage sludge stabilization with hydrated lime reduced fecal coliforms more than 99.99% and also stabilized sludge covered standards of class b of usepa criteria.

Anaerobic digestion of polyelectrolyte flocculated waste activated sludge.
This work examined how adding one of three polyelectrolyte flocculants (T3052: cationic, T2000: non-ionic, and T1052: anionic) affected the anaerobic digestion of wastewater sludge. Methane production, floc characteristics (morphology and zeta-potential) and process parameters (soluble chemical oxygen demands (SCODs) and reductive potentials) were monitored along the digestion tests. The digest...
full textbioremoval of lead by use of waste activated sludge
biological removal of lead was observed in this study during treatment of synthetic solutions of this heavy metal by a sample of waste activated sludge (was) having mlss concentration of 10000 mg/l. the objective was determining the capability of was in removal of lead in three different conditions of treatment: without any aeration and feeding, by simultaneous aeration and feeding and by aerat...
full textSimulation and assessment of sludge concentration and rheology in the process of waste activated sludge treatment.
The process of using flat-sheet membrane for simultaneous sludge thickening and digestion (MSTD) was employed. The variations of sludge concentration and rheology were characterized and simulated. Based on mass balance analysis, mathematical models were developed and successfully used to predict and evaluate the variations of sludge concentration and the digestion efficiency in the MSTD process...
full textEffect of Sludge Pre-Treatment Techniques on the Biogas Production from Waste Activated Sludge
Introduction There is a significant and inevitable fact in Turkey which is the “sludge problem” generated from the wastewater treatment plants. There are many sludge disposal techniques currently applied in Turkey such as incineration, landfilling, composting, etc.; but the disposal of sludge with those conventional methods is difficult and expensive, often requiring over 50 per cent of the ope...
full textRheological characterization of centrifuged thickened waste excess activated sludge (EAS): the maceration effect on sludge pumpability
The purpose of this study is to determine how the rheological characterization of centrifuged thickened waste excess activated sludge (EAS). Wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) contain a number of transport operations of suspensions with special flow characteristics. Flow characteristics, in particular viscosity related effects, vary from very water-like to strongly non-Newtonian. This study use...
full textCFD analysis of sludge accumulation and hydraulic performance of a waste stabilization pond.
Sludge management in waste stabilization ponds (WSPs) is essential for safeguarding the system performance. Sludge accumulation patterns in WSPs are strongly influenced by the pond hydrodynamics. CFD modeling was applied to study the relation between velocity profiles and sludge deposition during 10 years of operation of the Ucubamba WSP in Cuenca (Ecuador). One tracer experiment was performed ...
